Overview of position
Somalia Country Office of our client is undertaking feasibility studies and detailed design of priority urban roads in Kismayo and Baidoa, a component of the Somali Urban Investment Planning Project (SUIPP) supported by the World Bank. Working in a close relationship with the Municipality and the Government partners, the project covers about 30km of urban roads in Kismayo and 20 km of urban roads in Baidoa. The project involves topographical survey, social and environmental impact assessments, filed investigations, road designs, preparation of specifications and cost estimates to be undertaken by our client's engineers and consultants. The project activities expected to be commencing in March with target completion by July.
The specific role expected from the consultants is to support the project activities of their respective locations in Kismayo and Baidoa, which include technical and operational assistance to consultancy firms engaged in project activities, Government partners and community liaison on project activities and reporting to our client's project manager.
Role objectives
- Familiarize with project objectives, project scope, stakeholder groups interests and the deliverables including timelines;
- Facilitate technical and operational support to the consultants working in the project, including accompanying in site visits, facilitating access to communities for consultation and technical tasks; carry out the role of an interpreter (English – Somali and vice versa) as and when required;
- Participate in technical studies and design tasks being carried out by the consultants engaged in site survey, environmental and social impact assessments, feasibility studies and road designs;
- Maintain productive working relationship with the Government partners, stakeholders and the communities interested in the project;
- Report to project manager / road design engineer on issues encountered at project sites seeking advice and provide input as requested by the project;
- Be available as local contact person to represent our client's project interest upon project managers approval for specific tasks;
Any other project specific tasks as may be assigned by the project manager.
Expected output
Consultancy tasks (by others) to be carried out in Kismayo are completed successfully, without impediment due to local issues
Productive working relationships are maintained with the state government partners, communities and overall stakeholder groups
Responsiveness to the project team inquiries and reports and updates are provided in a timely manner
Project reporting
Report management and operational inquiries and issues directly to the project manager. Report technical inquiries and issues to the road design engineer.
Submit weekly updates to the project manager / road design engineer via emails as per agreed format.
Key competencies
Geographical experience:
This local consultancy position is open to only Somali nationals with work experience in Somalia. Residents of Jubaland State (for Kismayo based position) and South West State (for Baidoa based position) or those with working experience in respective states would receive preference.
Team management
This role does not have team management responsibility.
Further information
