Role purpose and key objectives
TS is looking for a Senior Researcher to join the team as a Senior Researcher.
You will be managed and supported by Transparency Solutions, contracted to work on a project called ACRA, a collaborative, multidisciplinary project between the Department of Informatics, King’s College London, the African Leadership Centre, King’s College London, the London Business School and in partnership with The HALO Trust.
The overall purpose of the job is to collect and assess data held by HALO Trust, the world’s largest humanitarian mine clearance organisation. This is part of an Economic and Social Sciences Research Council (ESRC) Secondary Data Analysis Initiative (SDAI) for developing deeper exploration and exploitation of the data held by NGOs in developing contexts.
The role involves searching, collecting, cleaning, analysing and managing data sets. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are interested in peace and conflict research, data science or analytics, and are competent in qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods.
The post holder will be responsible for planning, execution, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of this data using systematic data collection and analysis methods.
Decision making, planning & problem solving
The post-holder will be expected to:
· Coordinate with the TS and the research team in a timely and prompt manner;
· Develop and implement the tasks of the project as agreed;
· Effectively manage his or her research tasks as well as research administration activities;
· Identify potential problems and bring them to the attention of the Research team as soon as possible;
· Be able to act independently to take forward assigned tasks.
Service Delivery
· Be responsible for carrying out the plans discussed with the research team, including the planning, execution, analysis, interpretation and reporting of their research and other activities;
· Be responsible for providing the team with research data and results upon request;
· Assist in ensuring the overall requirements of the research project are met.
Analysis & research
· Conduct systematic data collection and reviews
· Analyse data
· Produce stakeholder mapping
· Produce written reports
· Carry out all research analysis to consistent and high standards.
All of the above under the guidance and supervision of the Research team.
Team work
· Work with the Research team members to help ensure all requirements are met for the project;
· Collaborate with colleagues at other universities and relevant organisations if required.
Qualifications and skills
· Bachelor and master’s level degrees (preferably in social sciences, peace and conflict studies or related discipline)
· Fluency in written and spoken English and Somali.
· Experience in data transcription from Somali to English and vice versa;
· Good research skills especially and including data manipulation and analysis
· Experience with carrying out, and analysing qualitative and quantitative data
· Experience in designing qualitative and quantitative research tools, such as household surveys; focus group discussion guides, questionnaires;
· Proven track record of facilitation and recording of focus group discussions and individual interviews;
· Excellent knowledge of academic scholarship on research methods;
· Experience in conducting literature reviews;
· Experience in using qualitative analysis software (e.g. NVivo);
· Excellent analytical and writing skills.
Personal characteristics and special requirements
· Good interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships;
· Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with people from different professional and national backgrounds;
· Experience in demonstrating the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of academic and non-academic partners
· A desire and capacity to communicate effectively with, and influence wider research, business, NGO and policy communities;
· Be highly motivated, enthusiastic and well organised and able to work to deadline.
· You may be required to work irregular hours in accordance with the needs of the role;
