Organisational background:

Action Contre la Faim (Action Against Hunger) has been conducting humanitarian programs in Somalia since May 1992. Currently, Action Against Hunger is conducting its humanitarian activities in Somalia focused on treating and preventing malnutrition, increasing access to clean water and appropriate sanitation, strengthening the food-security, livelihoods and thus boosting the resilience of communities in Somalia as well as emergency response via program bases in Somalia.

Scope of Responsibility:

The Midwife is responsible for the Implementation of all components of the reproductive health policy in the Action Against Hunger mission; ensure supervision and training of a team and Obstetrical activities

The Midwife reports hierarchically to the Health & Nutrition field Officer and technically to the MCH Supervisor and Capital-Health and Nutrition Field officer. The Midwife will be based in Somalia-one in Wajid and one in Hudur.

Objective 1**:** Medical activities and patient care

Obstetrical activities

  • Is responsible of for all obstetrical activities (carry out pre-conceptual care, antenatal care, labour and delivery, post-partum care, neonatal care) including specific care for HIV pregnant women and women suffering from FGM (Female Genital Mutilation)
  • Prevention of fistula, as well as early management are integrated into obstetrical activities

STI (Sexually transmitted infection)

  • Provide effective diagnosis and treatment for patients with STIs (and their partners)

Violence

  • Provide appropriate medical and psychological care to victims of sexual violence, according to Action Against Hunger guidelines and protocols

Objective 2: Pharmacy and medical equipment management

  • Ensure efficient management of the ward pharmacy and medical equipment: drug and material orders, stock follow-up, storage conditions, inventories, follow-up of expired drugs and their return to the central pharmacy
  • Ensure the correct disinfection and sterilization of material, linen and premises according to MSF protocols

Objective 3**:** Organization and team management

  • Participate in the organisation of the ward in collaboration with other midwives and the ward supervisor
  • Ensure all medical procedures are carried out correctly
  • Ensure hygiene standards are respected
  • Work in collaboration with other wards and departments (eg operating theatre, paediatric ward, laboratory)
  • Assist in the supervision, motivation and training of the maternity team
  • Collaborate with TBAs in the community to encourage them to make early referral of complicated obstetric cases to the local health centre

Objective 4: Monitoring, analysis and reporting

  • Participate in the development of the plan of action
  • Participate actively in the recording, monitoring and reporting of medical activities (eg registers, partograms, patient files, reports and the compilation and analysis of statistics).
  • Ensure relevant transfer of information to the next duty team (especially the identification of at risk cases)
  • Report immediately to the technical referent any problem arising in the service, especially the loss/ robbery/damage of medical equipment or medicines.

Position Requirements

  • Recognized midwifery qualification (plus inscription to the national register if there is one).

Skills & Experience

  • Good understanding of the Somali and English language
  • Prior experience in Somalia or other relevant conflict / crisis situation a strong plus.

Competencies: Precision and exactitude. Good capacity to work in a team, flexibility. Good relations and ability to communicate with others. Know the different sign of malnutrition.

Personal qualities: Organization skills, rigor, flexibility, ability to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural people, open-minded, good communication skills, ability to listen, diplomacy.
