Background
Center for Education and Development (CED), Somalia is a non-governmental humanitarian and development organization working in Somalia. CED’s programs are both in emergency and development and are geared towards assisting partner community transition to self-reliance. Programs are designed to overcome ignorance, hunger, injustice and inequality.
CED is currently seeking a dynamic and self motivated and competent agronomist to join CED as an Agronomist.
Position: Agronomist

Position Summary:
The Agronomist will provide overall technical expertise and leadership in CED Agriculture programs. He/she will also assist CED in the designing and writing proposals, report writing, and undertaking needs assessments, training, monitoring/evaluation and the management and development of staff and resources under the program. The Agronomist will enhance CED program delivery and quality.
The successful candidate will have to undergo a probation period, of 3 months.
The Agronomist reports directly to the CED Program Manager and will be based in Mogadishu, Somalia with frequent travel to the project sites in Middle and Lower Shabelle Regions.
Specific duties of this position include:
- Responsible for designing, planning and implementation of agriculture programs
- Provide technical assistance in the implementation of other CED program activities.
- Monitor and evaluate CED program activities through regular field visits.
- Prepare operational plans and program narrative reports on a timely basis.
- Develop and conduct Training manuals on agriculture.
- Prepare a monthly, progress reports, quarterly, annual reports, and other reporting requirements.
- Training extension workers and farmers on modern agricultural practices
- Ensure that the knowledge, experience and lessons learned on the projects implementations are documented, validated and disseminated to the donors and communities through communication, workshops and meetings.
- Initiate and conduct field assessments
- Collate information from assessments and other sources for planning purposes.
- Preparation of concept papers and program proposals.
- Guide program personnel in defining work priorities and performance through coaching, and in developing capacity in support of program activities.
- Review and monitor program staff work plans.
- Prepare performance evaluation reports based on CED’s standard procedures.
- Conduct training and other capacity development activities.
- Conduct regular program staff meetings.
- Liaise with donors and represent CED in field coordination and sectoral meetings.
- Liaise with local administration to ensure support on the program activities.
- Maintain strong relationships with local authorities and target communities
- Perform any other tasks assigned to him/her by supervisor
Qualifications and Experience
- Masters Degree in Agriculture, crop production, agricultural economics, agricultural business or other relevant discipline.
- Training experience in agricultural related disciplines.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in the implementation of agricultural development programs and/or food security and livelihood programs.
- Knowledge of Somali context is a must.
- A proven track record in proposal development and report writing
- Expertise in Agriculture, food security and livelihoods sector.
- Excellent written and oral communications
- Experience in use of Microsoft access database, Excel sheets as well as other analyses software.
- Proven record of leadership and management of recovery and development programs.
- Sound knowledge and commitment to participatory approaches to working with communities.
Language Requirements
Fluency in written and spoken Somali and English
Contract period: one year, with possibility of renewal
