Overview of position

Our Client is a division of the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). Our client
is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly (RES/68/72) to ensure an effective, proactive and coordinated response to the problem posed by a wide range of explosive hazards.
Legislative mandates also recognize our clients technical expertise in responding to threats posed by unsecured and unsafe conventional weapons and ammunition stockpiles. As an office within DPKO, our client supports peacekeeping and special political missions in accordance with Security Council mandates.
Non-lethal tactical advice and analysis is delivered by our clients technical
advisors located in each AMISOM Sector Headquarters and at AMISOM Force Headquarters, who support AMISOM planning and operations. Our client support includes both enabling (“operate in spite of IEDs”) and response (“defeat the device”). As a component of the UN Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) our client also supports the Federal Government of Somalia, including the Somali Police Force, Somali Explosive Management Authority and National Security Advisor.

Role objectives:

The Transport Assistant works under the overall guidance and supervision of the Logistics Officer. He/she is responsible to effectively manage the transportation services under of the programme, including driver management, vehicle management and maintenance, ensuring drivers and vehicles are operated within the clients rules and regulations.

Expected output

Specific responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to; Summary of Key Functions:

  • Manage and supervise Drivers in their duties and responsibilities and work.
  • Ensure all Drivers comply with security rules and regulations, organizing refresher training when needed.
  • Ensure all new Drivers receive an in-depth briefing on induction regarding the clients rules and regulations regarding vehicles and security.
  • Responsible to ensure vehicles are in good working condition, regular maintenance is conducted and repairs are carried out in a timely manner, according to the clients rules and regulations.
  • Ensure all vehicles have relevant and updated documents and registration papers.
  • Coordinate with Logistics Unit to ensure all vehicles have mission kits and safety
  • equipment.
  • Order and maintain a store of spare part for normal services.
  • Maintain and update Transport spreadsheet, recording of Trip Tickets, Fuel Usage and Vehicle History.
  • Monitor and control vehicle trip sheets and perform regular checks on these documents to ensure there are no irregularities or disparities in fuel consumption.
  • Coordinate the dispatching of vehicles in a timely manner and notifying drivers of any change in security situation and coordinate the dispatching of vehicles for international staff movements before and after work hours.,
  • Establish, implement and monitor a work schedule for drivers, to ensure optimal use of driver time, varying driver schedules/shifts based upon demand.
  • Responsible for issuing and receiving vehicle keys and airport passes.
  • Ensure drivers perform daily maintenance, cleaning and routine checking.
  • Maintain vehicle and transport record keeping to ensure transparency and
  • accountability.
  • Any other duties assigned by Logistics Officer.

Further information:

  • At least 5 years’ experience as a Transport Assistant/Supervisor.
  • Experience as a professional Driver is essential.
  • At least 2 years’ experience with NGOs, UN Agencies or an international organization is essential.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or management position is desired.
  • Experience with UN rules and regulations is highly desirable.
